For this particular example I chose not to apply Antialiasing nor Feather edges. This time around, do select Fill transparent areas as well as Sample merged. It might be tempting to perform Colour to Transparency, however this would also change semi-transparent areas within the desired image area. The right thing to do now is Select → By Colour. However, one can also use the eyedropper tool to pick a colour from anywhere on the desktop. Here, I used f3f3e9 as a background colour for plain colour filling. (In this respect, Adobe Photoshop is no different.) Hence, choose a colour which is compatible with the background on which the resulting picture will eventually be used.Ĭlick on the background colour rectangle in the upper half of the Tool Options toolbox window to change the background colour. Some colour mixing will be inevitable and even desired. Do select BG colour fill and Sample merged and run a few tries while adjusting Threshold for best results. Within the Bucket Fill toolbox options, select Fill transparent areas only when necessary. Select the bucket fill tool or hit Shift+ B. The next step is optional and consists in filling the area that should become transparent with a plain colour first. This is done by selecting Layer → Tranparency → Add Alpha Channel. If this is the case, add an alpha transparency channel. Some image types lack a transparency channel JPG for example. Note: This tutorial is also available in PDF. Using fast bucket fill instead of contour selection (Tip: make a few background layers filled with different colors, so that you can easily check how the picture looks on different backgrounds.) In particular, sometimes making highlights near the edges of the object just slightly translucent can make the result look nicer and more natural, since it mimics the background reflecting off the object. This lets you fine-tune the edges of the object by editing the mask, while seeing live how the result will look. One extra trick I didn't show is that it's often more convenient to make two copies of the image layer, convert the selection to a layer mask on the upper one, and apply Color to Alpha to the lower. (You could also use bucket fill with the Color Erase mode as utopicam suggests.) If applied to the whole image, this would make the object look semitransparent too, but since only the background is selected, the shadows become translucent while the object itself stays opaque:Īnd here's the same picture on a pale blue background, to show the semitransparent shadows and reflections better: Now, here's the trick: instead of simply cutting out the background, I used Colors → Color to Alpha to change the background color (white) to transparent. (You can't see it in this scaled-down screenshot, but I really managed to do a pretty nice job with the selection, if I may say so myself.) Also, once I had the background nicely selected, I expanded the selection by a few pixels (at full resolution) to avoid leaving a whitish halo around the object due to aliasing. This was quite easy to do with the magic wand tool, although I had to fix some bits where the white stripes on the object blend with the background with the lasso tool. The next step is to select the background. (You can use this technique with a gray or colored background too, but it's a bit trickier to get good results that way.) In this case, the image is already nicely adjusted, so we don't have to do anything about that. In general, the first step would be to adjust the levels of the image until the background really is solid white, except for the shadows and reflections we want to keep. For example, let's say you have a photo shot in a lightbox, such as this nice and freely licensed picture of a Swedish wooden toy horse courtesy of Creative Tools: To expand on utopicam's answer, sometimes your image might contain areas, such as shadows, that you'd want to be semitransparent. In newer versions color to alpha doesn't exist layer -> transparency -> add alpha channel.

Print the PDF to a new PDF with page size of 11×17 (that’s a standard size, exactly twice 8-1/2×11).I also tried that same approach to print top and bottom halves of each page to 2 sheets, instead of the 200% / four sheet described above: It will print what was one page on four pages. In the Page Handling section of the Print dialogue box, set Page Scaling to Tile Large Pages and Tile Scale to 100%. Click OK to send it to the printer. Select the printer you will use (I used an HP LaserJet 3500.). Now, open that file, and choose File, Print. Then, in the Print dialogue box click OK and print the file to a new Adobe PDF file. Then in the Properties select Page Size, Add Custom Page. Create a custom page 17″ wide by 22″ long. Yet another friend sent along these instructions: Then you can set the font size to whatever you like before printing it.Ĭreate a couple more PDFs – since you have Adobe Acrobat to create PDFs, there’s another approach that, while a tad more cumbersome, could get you exactly what you want. …the best option is to have a printer that ‘just does it’ for you.Ĭopy/Paste – For simple documents, since you’ll lose any formatting, another approach is to select the text in the open PDF (use the text select tool, click at the beginning of the document, and then scroll to the end and shift-click at the end), and then copy/paste it into a word processing document. Depending on how the PDFs have been created, and your own needs, some of the PDF manipulation tools they offer, while not free, could certainly help. I’m sure there are other printers out there that will do the same, and if this is something you’ll do or need often, it might be the simplest approach, and not terribly expensive at that.įoxit Software – I use their great, free, small-and-fast PDF viewer, but a friend reminded me that Foxit software has several tools that actually allow you to manipulate PDFs in various ways. One of my friends mentioned that his Brother 2070n printer includes multi-page options that offer 1 -> 2×2 enlargement as it prints. Your Printer – the best option is to have a printer that “just does it” for you. But I’ll look at a two sheet solution as well (11×17″).Īnd also, PDF viewers can certainly zoom the size arbitrarily on screen. Printing, however, turns out not to be as obvious. Twice as wide and twice as high (17×22″). To get a true 200% increase in font size, you’d really need 4 sheets. Printing an 8-1/2×11″ page across two sheets of paper doesn’t really result in a 200% increase in printed size. I asked a few of my friends, and quickly had several potential solutions.įirst, a clarification. This is one of those cases where it really pays to know smart people. See the results in scale*.pdf created by example.įi <- c("pic1.pdf","pic2.pdf","pic3.I had no idea how to go about this, but it’s such an interesting question. It seems like there should be a way, right? Once the scale is too small, pdf will start to enforce linewidth, fontsize etc. It is quite usable, but works in some extent. If you like to stick with using pdf() instead of other ways like using sweave, then you would better use pdf function with more arguments, like bellow (I do not have ggplot2 installed, so simillar case is supplied). Consider using width, height and pointsize in pdf() function. Therefore, both types of gauge are still heavily used within motorsport. The digital gauge often costs more and requires accurate calibration. A digital gauge usually needs a frame to sit in which can be located on the wheel to give even more accurate readings. The digital gauge can be used on uneven ground and can be calibrated to the angle of the ground before accurately measuring the wheel camber. However, they do require the car to be sat on level ground to give an accurate reading. Spirit bubble gauges don’t require any calibration and are an analogue read out. Camber gauges can be digital or spirit bubble. There are two main techniques used to measure how many degrees of camber a wheel has. Geometry Suspension geometry is a mixture of theoretical lines designed into a suspension system to make it work in a particular designed way.If you need further assistance, a certified professional from YourMechanic can come to your car’s location to inspect the suspension and guide you through any needed adjustments. In extreme cases, a bad toe adjustment will also prematurely wear out suspension parts. If toe is off, basically the tires not only "scrub" the road as you move forward but that scrubbing necessarily causes the engine to work harder than it needs to and thus uses excess fuel. The toe adjustment, however, MUST be within the factory specified "range" if you are to get reasonable service out of the tires and also get the best possible gas mileage from the car. 060 inches toe in (that’s 60/1000 of an inch split across each side, so an even smaller amount if you are just looking at one tire).Īs noted, camber is not usually a big deal unless it is varies from side to side in which case the car will fight you at the steering wheel. Again, we are talking about very tiny amounts. If the tires/wheels are set such that they are EXACTLY parallel to each other, you have zero toe. If the tires are pointed out (splayed), you have "toe-out". If the front of the tires are pointed "inward", you have toe-in. "Toe" simply refers to the amount (measured in "inches", "millimeters", or degrees) that the front tires are pointed inward or outward, as you stand in front of the car looking at the grille/hood dead on. Toe is completely (entirely) unrelated to camber and unlike camber if the toe is off significantly on your car you can prematurely wear out the tires not to mention use lots of extra gasoline as the front tires are literally dragged down the road. Unless camber is way, way off it is unimportant insofar as wear on the tires. So whatever camber is selected when an alignment is done, it is important that the value on both sides of the car be kept nearly the "same". With regard to "camber" the thing to keep in mind is if camber on one front tire/wheel varies too much from camber on the other front tire/wheel, the car will tend to pull, or wander to the side with more "positive" camber. The amount is measured in fractions of a degree (a little bit makes a big difference and the tolerances are small which explains why alignments have to be done very carefully). Your car was designed with a tiny bit of negative camber, which is typical, because negative camber promotes vehicle stability on turns. If the tire/wheel assembly are perfectly vertical relative to the ground, you have "zero" camber. If, however, the top of the tire/wheel tilts out toward you as you are viewing the tire/wheel, you have positive camber. So if you are looking at the side of your car at the front tire/wheel and the TOP of the tire/wheel is tilted in, that is toward the centerline of the car, you have negative camber. Camber refers to the amount, if any, that the top of the wheel/tire assembly is tilted in (or out) relative to an imaginary perfectly vertical position for the tire/wheel. Blood transfusions should be used with caution as they can increase serum viscosity. Plasmapheresis may be used to decrease viscosity in the case of myeloma, whereas leukapheresis or phlebotomy may be employed in a leukemic or polycythemic crisis, respectively. Fundoscopic examination reveals dilation of retinal veins and flame shaped retinal hemorrhages. If hyperviscosity is confirmed, treatment can commence early on in the diagnosis. Although it used to be the case that test results would take a few days to return, the development of a new generation of automated clinical viscometers means that results can now be obtained within minutes, allowing accurate diagnosis and more targeted therapy. Those with myeloma will typically display a rouleaux formation on a peripheral smear and a large globulin gap, indicative of a significant paraprotein load. Patients will also have evidence of their underlying disorder. Normal plasma viscosity is between 1.4 and 1.8 centipoise while symptoms from hyperviscosity typically occur greater than 4 centipoise (about 4 times more viscous than water) and require emergency treatment. Diagnosis Īlthough elevated whole blood viscosity is a better measure of hyperviscosity and more common and clinically important, serum viscosity and plasma viscosity are more frequently measured. May occur with a white blood cell count greater than 100,000/mm 3 (100×10 9/L). High cell counts are seen in conditions such as polycythemia (raised red blood cells) or leukemia (more white blood cells, especially in acute leukemic blast crises). Types of hyperviscosity syndromes vary by pathology including serum hyperviscosity, which may cause neurologic or ocular disorders polycythemic hyperviscosity, which results in reduced blood flow or capillary perfusion and increased organ congestion and syndromes of hyperviscosity, caused by reduced deformability of red blood cells, often evident in sickle cell anemia. Hyperviscosity occurs from pathologic changes of either cellular or protein fractions of the blood such as is found in polycythemias, multiple myeloma (particularly IgA and IgG3), leukemia, monoclonal gammopathies such as Waldenström macroglobulinemia, sickle cell anemia, and sepsis. Symptoms of high blood viscosity include spontaneous bleeding from mucous membranes, visual disturbances due to retinopathy, and neurologic symptoms ranging from headache and vertigo to seizures and coma. Hyperviscosity syndrome is a group of symptoms triggered by an increase in the viscosity of the blood. It looks like BioShock 2 isn’t much better, either, with players stating the graphics look only marginally better than they did in the original game. As one gamer put it, the game looks “retextured,” not remastered. One of the most prominent issues brought up by players is the underwhelming visuals. Thanks to the ease with which players can leave feedback for games, the biggest issues with BioShock: The Collection became evident rather quickly. From graphics issues to crashes, it seems the remastered BioShock games are riddled with many of the same issues the original games experienced, at least on PC. But not every remaster is created equal, as in the case of BioShock: The Collection.Īccording to many PC gamers, BioShock: The Collection is causing many players quite a bit of frustration. There’s something special about experiencing a past game that’s been updated with fresh graphics, quicker frame rates, and a host of fixes that were omitted the first time around. Game remasters have become a common trend in the video game industry, and it’s a move many gamers are happy to support. We may also use other supports to help set expectations for the student. Over time, as the student has more practice with new skills and behaviors, reinforcement will be needed less often. Reinforcement also helps students maintain (or continue to use) skills and encourages them to behave in an appropriate manner. For example, he or she might learn how to ask for a specific item in a school setting and then use that skill at home or in the community. After a student has learned a new skill, we also might provide a reinforcer when he or she demonstrates generalization of that skill, which means the ability to perform the skill in a setting other than the learning environment. We use reinforcement to help strengthen new skills we are teaching. But for students with developmental disabilities, we may not be able to rely on these and may need to look to other forms of more tangible reinforcement such as a fun activity or a special treat. They usually respond to reinforcers, or consequences, such as praise or extra attention for a job well done. Often, the learning environment provides the reinforcers for typically developing students. Within the context of ABA, a reinforcer is a consequence that follows a behavior and strengthens that behavior or increases the likelihood that it will occur again in the future. Those of us who use applied behavior analysis (ABA) in our work with students who have autism and other special needs have a more complex and comprehensive definition of the term. While this is true, reinforcement is more than just rewarding good behavior. Reinforcement is defined in the Merriam-Webster Dictionary as “the action of strengthening or encouraging something.” Many people think reinforcement means providing rewards – especially for good behavior.
